Dental fillings are one of the most common dental procedures. Studies estimate that approximately 90% of adults in America have had a cavity. Most of those cavities have been filled. This is a simple, minor procedure that we perform almost every day, but what are fillings, and how do they work?
What Are Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are a very common treatment for minor decay, most often cavities. The goal of any filling procedure is to remove the decay, then fill the tooth to restore function, structural integrity, and aesthetics. They have been performed in some form for hundreds of years. At Craft Smiles we favor “white fillings,” but fillings are frequently offered in two types: metal or white.
These are the traditional fillings that your parents, and even you, probably have. Metal fillings use dental amalgam. This is an alloy of mercury and several other metals, typically silver, copper, and tin. Dentists have been using this basic method for hundreds of years. Metal fillings are sturdy, cheap, and easy to install. However, we avoid them due to health concerns related to the metal content.
White fillings are quickly becoming the new industry standard. They use white ceramic or resin to make a sturdy filling that blends perfectly with your teeth. Although more difficult to apply, the health benefits and aesthetics of these fillings are unmatched.
How Does It Work?
A filling procedure typically takes only a day. At your visit, Drs. Kush Patel or Krutav Patel will remove the decayed parts of the tooth. They will then fill your tooth with the composite filling, which will be color-matched to your teeth. A special light cures and seals the tooth, and your filling is done.
