Dentists Dr. Kush Patel and Dr. Krutav Patel of Fullerton, CA want to remind their patients that your oral health is critical in fighting off the flu this winter. Your mouth is the main entryway for the flu virus. Your oral health can help you prevent catching the flu, and can help fight off the flu if you do get it. Craft Smiles offers some tips on how to stay healthy this winter.
Fight the Flu with Oral Health
- Tip: Always Drink Plenty of Water
How: Drink water all day long, all winter long. Your body needs water to stay strong and fight off germs. When you are sick our body’s dehydrated quickly and the use of cold medications can accelerate dehydration. Staying hydrated keeps you from developing dry mouth and gives your body a boost to fight off germs. If you have the stomach flu, staying hydrated can help reduce acid build up and enamel erosion caused by the stomach acids from vomiting.
- Tip: Avoid Sugary Beverages and Lozenges
How: Sugar is not good for your health or your oral health. Sugar is what plaque loves to feed on causing tooth decay. Avoid sugary fruit drinks or sodas and drink water instead. Throat lozenges can also have a lot of sugar in them. If you chew the lozenge it is likely that pieces may get stuck in your teeth and could cause tooth decay. Lozenges can help to stimulate saliva production and reduce dry mouth while soothing your scratchy throat, just try to find sugar free options.
- Tip: Keep Brushing & Flossing
How: Brushing and flossing while sick is important to keep your teeth and gums clean Brushing your teeth can also help boost your mood and may make you feel a little better. Keep up with your normal routine even when you are not feeling well to keep your gums and teeth healthy. Never share your toothbrush with anyone, and consider buying a new toothbrush after your recover from the flu.
